Swimming in the Diamond Capital of North America -- Meet the Ice Floes Masters of Yellowknife, NWT.

The Ice Floes Masters are Canada's most Northern Masters swim club. From swimmers, to triathletes and water polo players, "we work it all," says Ice Floes Masters head coach Karla Cairns.

"Everybody just wants to have fun. It seems to be everybody's goal."

The 20 members of the Ice Floes Masters swim three times a week in the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The club is three years old and is part of Alberta Masters Swimming Association.

Coach Cairns, who used to swim in Edmonton, believes in making swimming fun. She used to coach age group swimmers with a similar philosophy in mind. It's highly unlikely coaches will have Olympic gold medalists, she believes.

In the meantime, "the chances that I'm coaching a doctor (for example) who'll stay in swimming is more likely."

Then the point of coaching is to ensure swimmers enjoy the sport for life and "be happy with it," she says.
